A customer sent me these photos dealing with this particular problem. His problems were primarily dealing with log ends. This is very common with this type of construction. Because the end grains are exposed to rain and by their very nature moisture is brought into the log by these ends. Most roof overhangs do not protect these ends as they go beyond the roof. Some of the ends were repaired by saturating the wood with CPES and they forcing a mixture of Layup & Laminating Resin into the wood, you can see this in the close-up photo (fig 3).

Fig 6 shows a different method of restoration. In this particular case, the customer chose to CUT off the log ends and install new ones. The log end was removed and then CPES was applied to the exposed wood. When it cured new pieces of wood were secured using rebar driven into the centers of the wood. A thick slurry of layup and laminating epoxy mixed with sawdust was used to seal the joint where these two pieces meet. It’s very hard to tell which ones were original and which ones were replaced.

On a different note some log home owners have chosen to cut all the longs end completely off. This will completely change the look of the home however it’s a personal choice.
